“Opihi” or Limpet Shells
Opihis, or limpets, are well-known in Hawai’i for their distinct circular shape and natural colors. They hold cultural significance and are traditionally considered a prized delicacy, eaten cooked or raw. There are only four species, commonly found along rocky beaches. Sizes are typically small to medium, though larger specimens are occasionally found.
At Salt & Water Co., we never collect shells with living creatures inside. Full shells are returned to their habitat, and any unused shells are also carefully returned, reflecting our commitment to sustainable and ethical sourcing. All shells are handpicked with love by me on O’ahu.
